In association with Haynes, Deconstructing Design Icons is a
series of programmes that looks at the stories behind objects
that have become acknowledged icons in their genre.
The series is an eclectic mix of objects that have become
familiar all over the world for a variety of reasons; some tapped
into a particular mood or fashion, others were just in the right
place at the right time. All were supreme in fulfilling their
intended purpose.
Using a mix of archive and modern material, each programme
looks at the wider context of the featured object; the life and
times into which the object arrived as well as how it then
developed. The programmes will also look at how the objects
survive today, what they represent in the 21st century, as well
as keeping them functioning and maintained. Interviews will add
a personal experience to the particular objects.
Episodes include icons from the world of aviation such as the
Spitfire - the legendary World War Two fighter, the Lancaster
bomber that carried the bouncing bomb and Concorde - the
supersonic passenger jet.
On land, there are episodes about the Mini and the Triumph
Bonneville as well as the hovercraft. There are also episodes
about the Fender Stratocaster electric guitar that provided the
impetus for today’s rock bands. The series also includes
episodes on mega-structures such as the Golden Gate Bridge
and the Empire State Building.
